Conversion & refurbishment

Architecture that
rethinks
what exists.

02 / Position

For us, architecture is more than construction – a tool to challenge conventions and create spaces that matter.

Our projects range from conversion and energy refurbishment to houses, hybrid urban buildings, pavilions and experimental structures. Every design is rooted in architectural research – and grounded in real needs and constraints. Making more with less: hence the name, studio more.

  1. more: architecture

A focus on architectural quality and artistic, space-defining design – from the first idea to the built detail.

  2. more: social aspects

How can built architecture positively influence the way we live together? We pay attention to the effect of what is built and to respectful collaboration with everyone involved in construction.

  3. more: responsibility

Sustainable materials, a conscious approach to context and to built heritage – responsibility for our environment.

04 / Building on, not replacing

Haus U5 – a 1950s building, rethought

  1. Existing condition: a 1950s detached house, used storey by storey, no longer adequate in spatial or energy terms.

  2. Intervention: breaking through the existing slab above the basement opens the living space towards the garden, connecting inside and outside across several new levels.

  3. Spatial quality: the levels zone without separating; the seating staircase becomes an extended living room and the meeting point of the house.

  4. Energy measures: heat pump, triple glazing with external sun protection, insulation of roof, floor and external walls.

Our drawings speak a clear language: black shows the existing fabric, studio pink the new intervention, yellow the demolition.

05 / Services

From existing buildings to material research

  1. Conversion & refurbishment

studio more specialises in converting existing buildings to meet current requirements and needs. Together with specialist planners, we offer this service in its entirety – from the building survey and energy refurbishment to spatial reorganisation.

  2. New construction

How can new buildings be attractive from today's perspective? This question drives us in terms of sustainability, economy and design, and shapes our new-build projects – from houses to hybrid urban buildings. Collaborations with other planners and contractors are very welcome.

  3. Studies, feasibility & competitions

Whether a plot has potential, an existing building is worth keeping or a programme adds up – studies and feasibility checks create clarity early on. We gathered in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in studies and competitions, among other things through working in leading offices such as allmannwappner and COBE Berlin – Vanessa Carlow.

  4. Planning & realisation

We accompany projects from the first idea to the built result: design, permitting, detailed planning, tendering and site supervision – in close coordination with clients, specialist planners and trades. We define the exact scope together, tailored to your project.

  5. Research & material development

We are engaged in materials research and development with the aim of advancing the knowledge and use of sustainable, natural building materials. Findings from teaching and research feed directly back into our building projects.

06 / Research & practice

A studio between building site and university

Teaching has been part of studio more since 2018 – at the Technical University of Nuremberg and at the University of Stuttgart in building materials and integrative building technology. Our research into sustainable, natural building materials feeds directly back into our projects: what we research, we build – and what we build, we question.

studio more was founded in Stuttgart in 2023 by Dr Mostafa Aboughaly and Chiara Weiß – both teach, research and build.
